Anthony Smith, LLB(Hons) (Managing Director)

Anthony Smith is a specialist commercial lawyer with over 20 years’ experience. After qualifying in Sheffield, Anthony spent 15 years working as a commercial lawyer in Bristol, the last 11 years of which were as a partner in a city practice leading commercial and residential property teams.

Anthony Smith established Progression Solicitors in 2005 after moving to the Lake District. Anthony is the firm’s managing director.

Alongside managing Progression Solicitors, Anthony has extensive experience in commercial and residential property including property development under affordable housing schemes. From 2008 to 2010 Anthony spent a significant amount of time promoting the development and construction of rural affordable housing in the South West of England. Anthony received an LABC Social Housing Developer of the Year award in 2010 for building 17 disabled specification affordable houses as part of Progression Homes.

Anthony has always been keen in supporting the local community in any way possible. As a former member of Windermere Rotary, Anthony was one of the supporters of Rock on Windermere 2016 which raised funds for the Cumbria Flood Appeal. Progression Solicitors and Anthony also played a major part in organising the Low Wood No Wood Cardboard Boat Race for 3 years running, in support of the Calvert Trust. Anthony and the firm gained recognition of their efforts by being awarded the silver award in the legal/insurance sector of the International CSR Excellence Awards 2015.

Anthony has particular expertise in family businesses and is a keen supporter of the Cumbria Family Business Awards since their inception in 2016.

Pamela Horobin, LLB(Hons) TEP (Director)

Pamela Horobin specialises in providing advice on wills, inheritance tax planning and the administration of estates and trusts. Pamela also advises on issues relevant to elderly clients including residential care funding.

Alongside estates and succession planning for the future, Pamela has considerable experience in advising on matters of contested wills and claims against estates, including financial provision claims under the Inheritance (Provision for Family & Dependents) Act 1975. Pamela Horobin is a member of STEP (Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners), an accreditation given to practitioners who are recognised as having particular expertise in these areas of work. Given the nature of Pamela’s work, she understands the importance of offering home visits to the elderly and infirm.

After training in a long established legal firm in Westminster, Pamela worked as a solicitor for high net worth clients before working at Burgess Salmon and TLT law firms in Bristol.

Pamela started Progression Solicitors in 2005 after moving to the Lakes in 2001.

Nicola Wood (Director)

Nicola Wood is head of Progression Solicitors’ Commercial Team, specialising in commercial property.

Originally from Ulverston, Nicola left Cumbria to qualify and work in London for a number of years before returning to live in the Lake District in 2012. Nicola worked for a year in property finance before moving to the commercial property group of a leading City firm for eight years, working on high profile cases involving part-privatisation of the London Underground network and strategic transfers of well known UK food retailers and hotel chains.

At Progression, Nicola works almost exclusively on corporate and commercial property work including landlord and tenant, investment sales and purchases, development work and business sales and purchases, with her particular legal interests in commercial landlord and tenant matters.

Nicola is also the firm’s money laundering reporting officer (MLRO), ensuring that the firm complies with anti-money laundering regulations in all aspects of the business.

Lisa Bell (Lisa Martin), LLB (Director)

Lisa is a member of Resolution, a community of family justice professionals who work with families and individuals to resolve issues in a constructive way. Resolution members abide by a code of practice to support clients to resolve matters as constructively – and with as little conflict – as possible.


Lisa Bell (formerly Lisa Martin) joined the firm in March 2012 and is Head of Family at Progression. Originally from Barrow-in-Furness, Lisa qualified as a solicitor at Northumbria University and worked in Newcastle-upon-Tyne at the start of her career, before returning to Cumbria in February 2012.

Lisa has vast experience in all areas of family law, including divorce and separation and all that follows from this – such as financial remedy, co-habitation breakdown and child arrangements. Lisa has acted on behalf of clients with business interests, in the complex negotiations that arise when settling finances on divorce or separation. Her expertise allows her to offer services for those wishing simply to enter into a separation agreement or those seeking full representation throughout the divorce process, whether court proceedings are involved or not.

Lisa Bell offers advice and assistance to a variety of clients in children matters including parents wishing to apply for or respond to an application for a child arrangements order (formally residence and contact proceedings) and she also has experience in dealing with child abduction and domestic violence.

Richard Denby (Director)

Richard Denby joined Progression Solicitors in June 2019 and promoted to director in June 2020, having worked locally since qualifying as a solicitor in 1993.

Richard has amassed a wealth of experience with most of those years spent as head of Wills, Probate and Trusts department. Richard Denby dealt almost exclusively with all aspects of wills, probate and estate administration, trusts, inheritance tax, powers of attorney, Court of Protection and trust and estate litigation, including seeking recovery of funds misappropriated, and professional negligence.

Richard is a full member of both STEP and Solicitors for the Elderly. Richard was particularly interested in Solicitors for the Elderly due to their campaigning on behalf of the older population to influence government policy on issues such as care fees and Powers of Attorney.

Richard’s main interest is in acting for older clients, and clients preparing for their later years, having a knack for explaining complex issues in simple language, and helping to navigate issues such as care fees, bereavement and difficult family situations.

Richard Denby is based primarily at our Barrow-in-Furness and Ulverston offices.

Claire Meehan, LLB(Hons) (Director)

Claire Joined Progression Solicitors in July 2020 and was promoted to Director in May 2022.  Claire qualified as a Solicitor in 2011 and is Head of the Residential Property Department.  Claire spent many years working on the Fylde Coast until making her move to South Lakeland in 2017 where she has established herself within the local area.

Claire specialises in residential sale, purchase and re-mortgage matters and brings a wealth of experience to the Progression property team.  Claire considers client satisfaction to be of the utmost importance to her, ensuring that the process is as efficient and smooth as possible throughout.

Warwick Alabaster (Director)

Warwick joined Progression Solicitors in October 2020 as head of the litigation and dispute resolution team. After obtaining an honours degree from Leicester University in 1994 he embarked upon his legal career, undergoing his conversion course and formal training in Leicester where he worked as a litigation solicitor until 2007.

Since 2007 Warwick has been based in the Lancashire area, working as a senior litigation solicitor advising clients on a wide range of issues including commercial, construction, professional negligence, insolvency, property and partnership disputes. Warwick also has experience in selective areas of dispute resolution including the sports disciplinary tribunal and intellectual property, and has been involved in Judicial Review relating to local authority planning permissions.

Warwick is based in Lancaster, advising all clients including businesses, local authorities and individuals across the Cumbria and Lancashire regions.

Judith O’Brien (Judith Wright), LLB(Hons) (Senior Associate)

Judith qualified as a solicitor in 1997, after working in the legal profession for 6 years prior to this as a paralegal. Judith is highly regarded by her clients, providing expertise in all aspects of family law including divorce & dissolution, separation, pre-nuptial agreements and children issues. Judith has a wealth of experience acting for clients of high net-worth, including business owners.


Judith joined Progression Solicitors in September 2020 to provide advice to clients in Lancashire and the surrounding areas.

Hannah Booth (Senior Associate)

With 7+ years’ experience as a fee earner in the private client department Hannah Booth specialises in the administration of estates both non-taxable and taxable which are simple or more complex. Hannah’s experience includes probate applications for non-domiciled individuals holding foreign wills, estates requiring overseas grants, and estates with issues of insolvency or maladministration. Hannah provides advice on inheritance tax planning, drafting straightforward and complex wills, lasting powers of attorney, registrations of enduring powers of attorney, deputyship applications and assisting with contentious work. Hannah also has experience of land registrations, assents and conveyancing, as well as background knowledge in family law.

Hannah is a member of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives and is head of the Private Client Department at Progression Solicitors, ensuring smooth running of the department and overseeing management, training and compliance.

Legal Interests

Hannah has a particular interest in contested wills, contentious probate and estates that involve fraud, maladministration or insolvency.

Hannah is a Dementia Friend through the Alzheimer’s Society, recognising the importance of understanding clients’ needs where they or their family members are affected by cognitive difficulties. Hannah also plans to undertake her membership qualifications with STEP (Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners) to strengthen her expertise in the private client sector.

Hannah advises clients across our offices and can provide assistance to the elderly or infirm by offering home, hospital or care home visits.

David Townend, BA (Consultant)

Throughout his legal career, David has worked almost exclusively on commercial matters, undertaking business sales and purchases, commercial property transactions and a considerable amount of landlord and tenant work. David also has significant experience in site acquisitions and disposals, for both residential and commercial developments and has acted for national retailers for a significant number of years.

Legal Interests

David’s main interest lies in commercial property, particularly the retail sector where he has acted for many years on leases in shopping centres, retail parks and the wider high street.

David now works on a consultancy basis and can be contacted via the Windermere office.
